Some contend that the gold menorah from the Second Temple is hidden in the basement of the Vatican. In 1996, Israel’s Minister of Religious Affairs Shimon Shetreet met with Pope John Paul II and reported that he had asked for the Vatican’s cooperation in locating the gold menorah from the Second Temple that was brought to Rome by Titus in 70 C.E. Similar requests were made to the Vatican by other noted Israelis. Professor Steve Fine has researched the answer and explains how this allegation arose.
