Community Services Department
By: Noah Rosenthal
The Community Services Department has become a cornerstone of support at the Sephardic Community Center, offering a wide variety of engaging, unique, and fun programs. Under the leadership of Director of Community Services Aimee Mishaan, the department has developed both in-person and virtual programming aimed at improving the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of our community. We’re so excited to share the amazing programs offered at the Center!
For those living with Parkinson’s Disease, the Center offers several specialized programs. Healing Music, led by Board Certified Music Therapist Nikki Schoen, helps participants maintain and develop their vocalization abilities. This course is offered through Zoom, providing the flexibility for people to participate from the comfort of their own homes.
Rock Steady Boxing is available through Zoom and in-person. This program is designed to help people fight back against Parkinson’s by focusing on improving motor skills, controlling tremors, and boosting overall fitness. Participants can experience increased strength, stability, and confidence, ultimately making them feel rock steady!
For those caring for individuals with Parkinson’s, the SCC also offers support through a monthly course facilitated by Licensed Clinical Social Worker Erika Adelman, LCSW, SIFI. This group provides an open forum for caregivers to share experiences, coping strategies, and vital information.
The Brain Works program, a two-hour session offered twice a week, is designed for individuals experiencing mild to moderate mid-stage memory loss. This upbeat and social program focuses on enhancing cognitive function, specifically concentration and focus, while fostering a sense of community and support among participants.
The SCC is also dedicated to providing support for those grieving the loss of a loved one. For widows, the Women & Their Journey program, led by renowned psychotherapist Diane Catton, offers a safe space for participants to connect with others who understand their experience. This bi-monthly group encourages emotional healing through shared stories and support. The New Beginnings Social Club for Widows also offers a lively social atmosphere where widows can enjoy dinner, karaoke, dancing, and art.
To help people of all ages maintain their health, the SCC has partnered with doctors from Mount Sinai Hospital to host health and wellness events. These sessions provide valuable insights into a range of critical health topics. Past events included a cardiologist discussing how to maintain a healthy heart, followed by a fitness class designed to promote cardiovascular health. An OB/GYN addressed the stages of menopause and led an interactive Pilates class, highlighting how Pilates can increase bone density and strength. Finally, a gastroenterologist offered advice on preventing colon cancer, and a nutritionist provided tips on improving gut health. These expert-led sessions are essential for those looking to improve their overall quality of life.
The Community Services Department continues to serve as an invaluable resource for everyone, providing them with the tools and support they need to live healthier and more fulfilling lives. These programs empower people to thrive in our supportive and tight-knit community!
